Thank you for this question about wood floors in the kitchen. Wood floors are to me very beautiful, okay? I love the look of the wood and bamboo flooring does look great. The way I see it is real wood from western trees looks beautiful until they get scuffed up and dishes, pots, and pans get dropped on them then they start looking fairly bad. I think the wood in a kitchen should not be done because of the store mentioned things that fall onto the floor but add water too, and you have a combination for rapid disintegration of the wood. Now bamboo on the other hand you can pretty well place it under water and it will come out looking fairly good.
I am a huge fan of terrazzo flooring. You can make beautiful designs in it and have wonderful colors in it too. The downside to it is when you drop a glass or plate, bowl on it, it will get broken into pieces. The upside to terrazzo is if your house gets flooded just wash the house out with a hose, let the floor dry and you are all set to go and start living in it again.
